Within 12 months, you will:

  • Diversify your skills by developing a deep understanding of a regional area, experiencing it as a local, becoming the trusted voice and advocate for communities through independent journalism
  • Be embedded in a dynamic multimedia newsroom, working across breaking and daily news to cover local, regional and national issues in an ethical and independent team
  • Have learnt from experienced journalists and editors, telling the stories that celebrate, define and strengthen the community where you live
  • Develop your multimedia, data and social news skills on our national digital news desk to keep an audience of six million Australians across 100+ mastheads informed and entertained

WHAT YOU WILL GET FROM THE TRAINEE PROGRAM

Our bespoke on-the-job training program includes the latest digital tools and techniques, video and audio, data journalism, photography, social media, audience and engagement, and practical media law. Fundamental news writing and reporting skills will be covered in combination with training in specialised rounds, such as court, local democracy, federal politics, investigations, and sport. Your access to insight and expertise.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Experience Required

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to the highest journalistic standards of accuracy, credibility, empathy and the community’s right to know.
  • Demonstrated news writing and digital production skills.
  • Excellent general and current affairs knowledge.
  • Passion for journalism and its role in society, especially regional communities.
  • High academic performance.

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field.
  • Demonstrated news writing and multimedia production skills.
